Randy is an Ottawa-based artist. He has been drawing and painting for over 20 years. He has worked in pencil, coloured pencil, ink, charcoal, conte, pastels, watercolour, acrylic, and oil. He has been painting predominantly in oil these past few years. He loves their tactile feel, their luscious consistency, their flexibility, and the ability to just push the paint around on the canvas. He paints a variety of subjects. His painting style is generally very realistic, with a great deal of detail, especially his portraits. He has received countless compliments from people who have seen his shows. Most people were impressed with the accuracy and detail of his portraits, as well as the wide diversity of subjects that he paints. He paints in a couple of different styles. The style of a painting is determined by the mood he wants to create or the image in his mind when a scene or subject inspires him to paint it.
Randy's art education has been self-directed. He has studied at Algonquin College, the Nepean Visual Arts Centre, and other Continuing Education venues. He has studied under various local artists in Ottawa including David Jones, and Kerry Stothers.
Randy is constantly learning. He does this through attending workshops and courses, reading, visiting galleries and studio tours, and through discussions with other artists. Workshops and courses provide him with a regular, consistent painting routine, and a setting devoted entirely to the painting process, free of household distractions. They also provide the opportunity to continue learning and refining his skills, to learn from other artists, in a social and relaxed atmosphere.
Randy exhibits with the Ottawa Art Association, the Nepean Visual Arts Centre, and ArtEast Ottawa. He has exhibited paintings in four group exhibitions in the past couple of years, displaying as many as 15 paintings in one show. They have been at the Nepean Visual Arts Centre, and a fundraiser for the United Way.
Many of his paintings are in private collections.
Randy is a member of the Ottawa Art Association, The Nepean Fine Arts League and ArtEast Ottawa. His paintings can be seen on these association's websites, as well as in the galleries here.
